DESTINATION – HEAVEN

I was driving down the road. My 3-year old son, DJ, and my 1-year old son, Wayne, were in the back seat.

“Wayne,” I heard DJ ask, “Do you want to go to heaven?”

I quickly glanced in the back seat. Wayne was listening intently and nodding his head. “Uh huh,” he answered.

“When I go to heaven, just grab my hand real tight and hold on and I’ll pull you up with me.”

“Okay,” Wayne answered.

THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

I was at my parents house and my three-year old niece, Holly, was there. She wanted to do up my hair, so I let her. She was working away; combing, teasing and trying different things.

When she was done, she stepped back and had an excited look on her face. She was obviously pleased with her creation.

“Why, Aunt Mary,” she said, “You look as pretty as a — rock.”

“Thank you,” I said. Hmmm.

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT

When my dad had surgery, my Mom, sister Connie and I stayed at the Med-Inn. Connie and I slept in one double bed and Mom in the other.

We settled in and turned off the lights. The room was completely dark. After about twenty minutes we heard a thud.

Connie sat right up. “What was that?” she asked.

“It’s me,” Mom answered, “I fell out of bed.”

“Where are you?” Connie asked.

Out of the darkness came Mom’s sweet voice. “I’m on the floor. That’s where you go when you fall out of bed.”

A DAY WITH DAD

My siblings and I used to pester Dad because we had never been out of Michigan.

“Get in the car,” he said one day, smiling. He was up to something. We kept asking him where we were going. “You’ll see,” he said.

Heading south on I-75, we tried to guess. Many ideas were ruled out after passing all the Detroit exits. We got to the “Welcome to Ohio” sign.

“Wow! Ohio! Are we going to Cedar Point?”

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.”

We finally stopped at a huge sporting goods store. We went in and Dad looked at baseball gloves. He purchased one for one of my brothers.

We got back in the car.

“Now where are we going?”

“Home,” Dad said, laughing. “Now you can’t ever say you’ve never been out of Michigan.”
