The Hearthstone Oven Bakery and Cafe

I don’t usually do a whole post on one restaurant or store, etc., but this one is deserving of a post of it’s own.

I might as well start with breakfast. They let me trade out the toast for biscuits. I love biscuits! The omelet was delicious.

This was the first time I’ve seen that you could buy water in a box. They said it tasted better. I was skeptical. Could it be better than bottled water? Yes, it could. It had a fresh, crisp clean taste. Maybe it was because it was a hot day and the water was cold, but it was great. You’re not putting plastic into our environment either. That’s the best thing.

Their bakery was great. They had pies….

donuts, cookies…

and bread!

I got excited over the bread. Why? There wasn’t any sugar in it! The food industry puts sugar and artificial sweeteners in everything – not just desserts, but cheese, meat and bread too. I’ve been trying to cut way back on processed sugar. In my Mom’s family, about half of them had cancer when they died. So, “The Big C” is a real threat in my life. Sugar can be addictive and that’s why they put it in everything – profits and greed. I’ve been reading that processed sugar and artificial sweeteners feed cancer, so I look for foods that are more wholesome. I still consume some sugar, but I’ve lowered that amount a lot.

This made me wish I had brought a cooler so I could buy some, but we were on our way up to Cadillac, so it would have thawed and spoiled in the heat. It’s great that they have this option, because their food is yummy.

They also have Michigan pillows, children’s aprons, candles, syrup and honey for sale.

That sign is a quote from the bible, “Be still and know that I am God.” That’s one of my favorite verses.

I heard that the owners are Mennonites and I saw a sign on the wall that mentioned “Dutch” on it, which of course made me think of Dutch apple pie. Mmmmmmm.

Linda and I were looking for a place to eat breakfast while heading up to Cadillac. She saw a billboard for this place. Great choice! If you’re on 127 in Michigan and see the Ithaca exit, get off there and head into town. My next post will be about Cadillac. See you there!

  1. Hey Mary I know it is said sugar feeds cancer and this is true, but as far as artificial sugar goes they do as you said but not so with stevia which I use all the time. Stevia from the stevia plant is natural and tastes vey good and can be used in baking. This place looks like a must go to. Thank you for sharing.Blessings Always.

    1. Thank you for the information. I’m not an expert so I try to avoid anything I’m not sure of. Honey and fruit are naturally sweet and wholesome, so those are good to have. I basically try to cut back on processed things – things that aren’t natural. I can’t seem to cut it all out completely. I don’t have that much will power, but cutting way back is good. Once again, thanks for the information about Stevia because I’m not an expert on this topic at all.

  2. This looks like my kind of place! I’m reading this before dinner, and now I am even more hungry! Every place we ate out at in or near Pentwater was fantastic! Food tastes so good in Michigan!
